Malaria Programme Achievements in 2015

The cumulative results for Year 5 (NFM) are shown as a percentage of the annual target. LLINs distributed indicator is funded by GFATM only, LLINs coverage population indicator is funded by GFATM and other donors, while the others are funded by GFATM-Multiple Grant.

The malaria grant has supported a scale-up in distribution of long-lasting insecticidal bednets (LLINs), with 1,191,090 (96%) LLINs distributed in 2015. This increase has been supported by microplanning and improved coordination at the township level. As a result of the mass LLIN distribution campaigns, coverage of the population at risk reached 97% of the target.

Over the year, 771,327 (71% of the annual target) suspected malaria cases received parasitological testing at public health facilities, and all suspected malaria cases (100%) presenting to public health facilities in 2015 received a parasitological test. Further 79, 287 (85%) of 90,939 confirmed malaria cases were treated according to the national treatment guidelines. This year, 3,158 (96%) health facilities reported no stock-outs of essential malaria drugs and commodities (RDT, ACT, CQ and PQ).

A total of 10,999 (79%) village health volunteers were trained during 2015. More training and supportive supervision are planned at various levels to improve programme performance.

Trends in malaria morbidity and mortality have been declining over recent years, as confirmed by reports from the national programme and its partners.
