TB and Malaria Care in Rural Myanmar

In addition to delivering babies and providing pre and post-natal care, midwives are trained to test villagers for malaria, refer those who show signs of having TB to a hospital or health center.

Ywa Ngan Township Hospital in Shan State relies on 24 affiliated midwives who staff rural health posts, each of whom are responsible for 3 or 4 villages, or approximately 500 people.

In addition to delivering babies and providing pre and post-natal care, midwives are trained to test villagers for malaria, refer those who show signs of having TB to a hospital or health center, and to make follow up home visits as part of DOTS (Directly Observed Short Course) treatment for tuberculosis.
