In a move to upgrade and strengthen the laboratory services in Myanmar for earlier and faster detection of TB and MDR-TB patients, the Global Fund supported installation of equipment for a biosafety level-3 TB laboratory (BSL-3 TB Lab) in Taunggyi, Shan State.

In a move to upgrade and strengthen the laboratory services in Myanmar for earlier and faster detection of TB and MDR-TB patients, the Global Fund supported installation of equipment for a biosafety level-3 TB laboratory (BSL-3 TB Lab) in Taunggyi, Shan State.

Union Minister for Health H.E. Dr Myint Htwe, Shan State Chief Minister, Shan State Minister of Social Affairs, and the responsible officers from the Ministry of Health and Sports, PR-UNOPS and World Health Organization attended the inauguration of the BSL-3 TB Lab in Taunggyi on 8 February 2017.

The Union Minister delivered an opening speech, which was followed by the official handover of BSL-3 TB Lab credentials and documents from the Myanmar Xircon Company to the Shan State Deputy Health Director. The BSL-3 TB Lab was opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony and the Union Minister and team then inspected the lab equipment installed.

It will improve access to treatment for TB and MDR-TB patients, not only in Shan State but also in adjacent States/Regions, and result in increased cure rates.
